2/21/2010 Streets of Willow with WSMC

Daytona Anderson on his Malcolm Smith Motorsports/Repsol backed Honda RS125 took his first shot at the Streets of Willow with the Willow Springs Motorcycle Club (WSMC) on Sunday February 21st for his second big bike race of the season. With the weather in the low 50s, wind gusts around 30 mph and rain looking imminent it was a challenging first day at the Streets. Daytona started the day off with breaking in the new top end during his first practice session of the day. All appeared to be good with the bike so when he took off for the second practice session he had his sights on running in the low 1’25”s, but with heavy traffic he could only get into the 1’30”s which is way off the pace. Frustrated after the 2nd practice session Daytona sat down and formed his game plan for the first race of the day.

Daytona had set the stage for a great day of racing with his performance in the first race. Second race up was the 250cc GP class with Daytona on his Honda RS125. Again out horse powered, Daytona was going to have his work cut out. Daytona got a great jump from the middle of the grid to put himself all the way up to 4th thru turn 1. Never intimidated, Daytona made an incredible dive to the inside in turn 3 to take 3rd place. By the end of the first lap Daytona had muscled his way into 2nd and set his sights on the leader. Daytona didn’t have the speed to match the leader, but with lap traffic Daytona made incredible passes to close the gap down, but settled for 2nd. With the second race complete and lap times coming down into the low 1’24”s despite the weather, it was obvious Daytona was in the groove.

The 3rd race of the day was the 500cc Modified Production class. A large grid meant there should be a lot of passing going on. Daytona came thru turn 2 in 3rd with one of the big bikes in front of him. It didn’t take but a few turns and Daytona had made short work of the bigger bike. Daytona took second place for the third time in as many races. Apparently the bigger bikes don’t like getting beat by the smaller displacement bikes and they protested the 125 racers. They won their protest and the 125 boys were DQ’d.

So Daytona ended his first racing weekend with WSMC with 3 – 2nd place finishes and a DQ. WSMC put on a great racing weekend, thank you.

For the first race Daytona was on his Honda RS125 in the 500cc Super Sport class. Daytona got off to a good start rounding turn 2 in 4th place. By turn 3 he had moved up another spot to put himself into 3rd. Working his way into 2nd turned out to be a challenge against the bigger bike, but by lap 3 he was into 2nd and checking out from third place. Daytona crossed the finish line in second place with a 13 second plus advantage on 3rd. At the end of the race it was obvious that Daytona was fired up and ready for a full day of racing.
